A nerd from the time before nerds were cool, I'm a perpetual daydreamer lost in the fantasies of my own mind. When I'm not writing you can find me ignoring broadcast television in favor of a good book, an engrossing video game or my wife and kids.

The mist walkers are real! All her life Lowen had thought the mysterious creatures a figment of her grandmother’s tales. But when their flying fortress appears outside her village, she and her family become the prisoners of these not so mythical beings. Together with her friend Emmi, Lowen must use her magical powers to fight her way across a landscape teeming with dangers as she attempts to reunite with her missing family.

A common theme among covers that catch my eye is their ability to communicate the overwhelming odds the character(s) face. The cover for Steven Kelliher's First Keeper exemplifies that feeling. The color composition is also quite excellent, creating a strong contrast through the use of only a few colors. the orange and red stand out brilliant against the greys and blacks giving a true sense that the fire is illuminated the darkness. I also like the vagueness of the characters depicted in the image. They are clearly humanoid but that is all we can tell. Even the hero at the center is somewhat obscured, leaving the reader intrigued about the details of all involved.
The cover of Philip Reeve's Night Flight evokes a sense of overwhelming odds, an impossible task. The muted blues and whites create a vagueness that stirs the imagination while also allowing the brighter colors to stand out.
Rex Jamison's The People's Necromancer has a slightly different cover from the others titles on this list. Rather than showing the highly obscured lead character facing overwhelming odds, the cover depicts him as being the central figure in something grander than himself. Like the other covers our hero is obscured and framed by harsh contrasting light, all of it rich with symbolism.
From the first time I saw this cover it became one of my favorites. Not only does it show our heroine standing tall against what should be an overwhelming force but it creates mystery by obscuring her features. As the third book in the series, we're left to wonder why her features are suddenly concealed and the huge waves teases us with glorious action. What makes this a favorite of mines, however, is the coloring. I absolutely adore the brilliant colors used for this title. There are so many bright colors but each is expertly placed near contrasting points of darkness to prevent one drowning out another. I truly love this piece.
The cover for Amish's Sita doesn't suggest overwhelming odds by any means but it is beautiful and effective in its own right. The coloration effectively suggest to the reader who and what matters. The opposing warriors vaguely drawn, shoved to the background and obscured by the author's name are not the focus. The focus of this novel is clearly Sita and the world she inhabits. Sita herself while faceless is characterized as a fierce and powerful woman.

There are five principle colors I'd like the artist to consider, purple #330066 (51,0,102), black (0, 0, 0), red #FF1919 (255, 25, 25), maroon #800000 (128, 0, 0), and gold #FFD500 (255, 213, 0). I have created a brief with a brief explanation of the significance of these colors.

Beyond the Fearsome Mist is a tale of dark tones such as those found in the works of N.K. Jemisen, and Brandon Sanderson. Those tones involve personal loss, sexual assault, abandonment, violence and an encroaching evil that threatens all.
