I am a .NET programmer who works full-time and doesn't have time to delve into the world of design, so here I am! I'm extremely interested in building niche online communities and this will be the first one.
This WP site/blog will not be for the most tech saavy audience, hence a clean design and clear message is what I'm aiming for. I am mostly easy-going, laid back. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Our target audience will be state and agency workers. We want this site to be a place where they can communicate openly and give us feed back to anything we post.
We will have three categories of publishing: news, deals, and features. Deals will be great deals that the user can read about and save money on a product or service. We have the news section where we'll post any news regarding state or agency workers. Featured post will be either a news piece of deal, which ever one holds more importance and should be featured. A last idea was to have an editorial voicebox, where we discuss a news piece, kind of like a rant, extreme opinions.
Our focus, esp. with the deals, will probably be the tri-state folks since this is where we live, but in time, if it becomes bigger, that's great.
What I want, as I've mentioned before, is easy on the eyes, clean, web 2.0 style WP theme. I haven't decided on any colours, so I'm open to anything.
On the right we would like typical 125x125 spaces for ads. I would like to have one rectangular banner to feature a main advertisement for a local business, so please keep these things in mind.
Your name will be featured on the About page for at least 6 months, crediting you with the design. I know how important it is to get your name out there...!
Edit: I forgot to mention, I started with a Cutline theme and will add more details by tonight (or at least a screen shot). If you have any questions, please let me know.
p.s. the attached file shows how (roughly) the structure I had in mind.
