Adaptive Extreme
Adaptive Extreme is a non-profit specializing in adventure travel geared specifically for individuals with disabilities, either physical, mental, or both.
Founded by an ex-adaptive ski instructor and inspired by one of his former participants, the goal of adaptive extreme is to create life changing adventures for disabled participants that otherwise would not be available.
We are a new non-profit, currently waiting on our 501c3 approval.
Adaptive Extreme's idea originated a few years ago on the side of a mountain, during an adaptive ski lesson. The participant, normally bound to a wheelchair, came twice a year to the mountains to free herself from the confines of her chair and fly down the mountain. Those two weeks are what she lived for the other 50 weeks of the year. The adaptive ski industry is a life-changing industry, fueled by amazing skiers and snowboarders who love to share the joy of sliding down the mountain with anyone, regardless of their physical or mental disability. During a break one day, this participant took out her keyboard (she lost her ability to speak a few years earlier), and typed in a simple question.. "If you are willing to take me sliding down the mountain, with cliffs and rocks and trees and certain death at every turn, any chance you would consider taking me cage diving with sharks?"…. and so the idea was born.
The reality is, the adventures that one can have as a "disabled" individual are severely limited and in most cases not possible without the assistance of trained volunteers and workers. Adaptive Extreme's goal is to provide these amazing adventures, both in the US and abroad, for any person, regardless of their disability. We truly believe that if we can do it, anyone should be able to.
Not all of our adventures will be adrenaline fueled runs down class IV rapids, we are also planning on more “easy” adventures, such as walking (or rolling) on the Great Wall of China, visiting the ruins of Machu Picchu, and watching the icebergs crash into the ocean in Patagonia.
Our goal is to have a logo that really captures our motto "Breaking Barriers, Shattering Limitations" There really is no pre-defined idea for this logo, other than it should be fairly clean and simple.
Have you ever had a point in your life where a burden you had was lifted or removed? It could have been the day you graduated, the day you finally paid off your car loan, or maybe the day you finally told the boss to take a hike and walked out of the door of your dead end job to start a new life. Do you remember sheer joy you felt when you tossed that burden aside. That is the feeling we are trying to capture in our logo, as that is the feeling a disabled person gets when they are doing something where the "burden" of their disability is not a part of the equation.
Thanks so much!
Jay
