We want to make the reality of economic hardship inescapable by amplifying stories of people in economic distress. We are hiring out-of-work story tellers whose work we will aggressively distribute through as many outlets as possible. We are are a sort of journalistic "swat team" trying to make the public understand that economic hardship is not only pervasive but growing in ways that too few people understand. Our founder, Barbara Ehrenreich, argues "we need to examine an emerging downside of “American exceptionalism.” While other so-called advanced countries have programs in place to reverse individuals’ trajectories into poverty, we have a plethora of policies – public and private, formal and informal – that actually accelerate the process of downward mobility. This project is the brainchild of Barbara Ehrenreich. Here is a link http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/w…hrenreich- to a video of her on the Daily Show- she is looking to apply the same skeptical attitude to the real challenges people are facing in this project.
The project was also inspired by the WPA Federal Writers Project: http://www.loc.gov/rr/program/bib/n…l/fwp.html. We are raising money to pay laid-off journalists and other story-tellers fair fees for their time and effort.
