For this logo, we need something distinctive that we could build a website around, but would also look good (either in original or simplified for the medium) on printed material and/or tshirts, 3-color stickers, etc. We're trying to communicate a sense of professional authenticity, but not necessarily a sense of formality or being 'uptight' - we want people to associate us with being a fantastic night out on the town, but not necessarily one they have to dress up for. An ideal logo would communicate to the viewer "This is indisputably a large funk/soul band, and an intriguingly good one at that", along with having an element of whimsy (perhaps a subtle 'visual pun'?) to help make it memorable.
From a target audience standpoint, I think we're caught between trying to market to two different groups: on the one hand, we want people in the 21-29 age groups to come to our shows, but the folks who own the clubs/casinos/booking agencies who actually pay us tend to be in the 40-and-up crowd. On the other hand, we want to regularly play $1000-a-night-and-up gigs, which are generally found through booking agents for casinos, corporate event bookings, and private parties (the vast majority of whom are in the 40+ age range). Thirty-somethings, at least in our area, tend to have kids and are not available to go out on the town as much. If elements of designing for the two groups are diametrically opposed, the 'older crowd' should probably win out.
For design copy, the only hard requirement is that it states the band's name: "Soulphonic". Font size, creative capitalization, etc, are all in the hands of the designer. We don't currently have a set tag-line, but we may want to add something down the road along the lines of "...and the Hi-Fi Horns!" or similar. For print material (flyers, tshirts, etc) being able to tastefully add the bands website address in a smaller size would be a plus. No additional pictures are required, but if we were able to somehow work an 'interesting' or 'quirky' aspect into the lettering or as an accent mark, that would be awesome. We do have a very rough web design layout. The colors, photos, and styling may all be subject to change, but I think we're going to stick with at least this kind of layout: http://www.soulphonicband.com/photo…ation1.jpg
Similar logos that we've looked at and enjoyed were along the lines of:

quite this risque...)
