My name is Paul Brandus. I am independent journalist and work in the White House press room covering President Obama. I work pretty much alone, but distribute a daily radio feature called "West Wing Report" (usually 1 1/2 minutes long) to more than 200 radio stations across the United States via the Capitol News Connection (capitolnewsconnection.org). I am also beginning to write columns and articles for magazines and newspapers here in the U.S. I have worked for many years as a journalist in places like Russia, Iraq and New York, and now work at the White House. It is very difficult and very challenging - but also exciting and rewarding. I hope whoever wins the design contest will come for a visit!
West Wing Report (people have also called it "WWR" for short) focuses on people, issues, and the daily drama of what is the most visible symbol of America: the White House. My goal is simple: to be a "fly on the wall" - an insider who brings information, color and analysis to people. I strive to be fast, accurate and unbiased. The information is mostly serious, but it is also quirky and humorous from time to time. Funny things happen at the White House just like anywhere else. I cover everything!
The audience for "West Wing Report" is Americans who are interested in politics, the President and the issues that effect them. There is no age range, no geographical or educational distinction - just people who are interested in finding out what's going in the White House - and how it impacts their lives.
The logo should reflect the imagery of the White House, and symbols of presidential power: the presidential logo, the American flag - and the White House itself. These symbols are instantly recognizable to Americans and to many people around the world. These symbols are more important, more durable and more permanent than images of whoever the President is. In other words, Barack Obama will be President until no later than 2017, but the images of the White House and the Presidential logo live on forever.
I've included some of these symbols for you, and also a design that a colleague has that is kind of interesting. Something like this would be interesting - but feel free to do something completely different!
WWR is also known for this phrase: "What's YOUR question for the President?" Because I get questions from citizens and try to answer them.
The logo will eventually go on a website, t-shirts, banners and coffee mugs. I will also give the winner a free advertisement for a month on my radio feed, which could result in a lot of business for you!
