"Learning to learn" Funding for the VHS project "MiA" approved for three years The Adult Education Centre Meppen (VHS) is starting a new model project called "MiA" this year. The abbreviation stands for "Migrants in Everyday Life". The project is funded by the BAMF (Federal Office for Migration and Refugees). "We are very proud that we were able to prevail with our project idea in a two-stage selection process," reports education manager RL. Only three model projects are funded in the whole of Germany, one of them at the VHS in Meppen. "MiA courses from the BAMF are women-only courses. We are starting a model project that expands the MiA courses from the BAMF and can be offered to both genders," says RL. "With our project proposal, we are aiming for the following impact goals: The MiA courses in the project accompany the integration course in a goal-oriented way, in that the participants acquire, try out and apply the necessary learning strategies and learning techniques. The MiA courses in the project open up the possibility of applying what is learned in the integration course in everyday life, i.e. outside the classroom in reality," explains project coordinator AV. Currently, preparations and workshops with ten teachers from VHS Meppen and the surrounding area are already in full swing. Under the umbrella "Learning to Learn", this series of workshops will take place online in May and June. "We were able to win a very competent workshop leader who will conduct this series online with our teachers," says the project coordinator happily. There will be a total of four workshops in which lecturers will develop learning strategies for practice. The results of the workshops form the basis for the integration course-supporting "MiA courses". "We take into account the internal and external learning conditions of our participants," explains Alexandra Vihtelič, adding that the range of content can lead to influencing the learning process, from increasing motivation, concentration and relaxation exercises to realistic time management and suitable learning environments. "Practicality is particularly important to us. We want to show our participants that what they learned in the integration course can be directly applied in everyday life. The 3-year project work will also serve as research. "We want to find out to what extent differences in immigrants' learning between women and men come into play in adulthood. Therefore, we are testing the designed 'MiA modules' for the acquisition of learning strategies in gender-segregated groups with gender-assigned teachers," explains the VHS project coordinator. The approach is derived from science-based findings. For example, that educational processes are strongly influenced by one's own biography (e.g. in the context of one's own education, upbringing and migration), socio-cultural influences (e.g. traditional and internalised patterns of one's own culture) and neurobiological processes (processing in the brain). According to the working hypothesis, these lead to measurable and recognisable learning differences between men and women in adulthood.
